Top Unhealthy Foods Which Can Cause Skin Problems

unhealthy food

Healthy skin is a reflection of a healthy body. When we eat nutritious food, our body feels healthy inside out. But due to our hectic lives, we often indulge in certain eating habits that do not benefit our health. This, in turn, may result in unhealthy skin. We seek various expensive treatments to maintain great skin whereas a simple change in our diet is all we need. There is a certain food that effects our skin. Some of these are:

1. Fast food

Nobody is oblivious to the fact that junk food has lots of bad fats and carbohydrates which causes various health issues. Not only is it bad for our internal organ but also for our skin. These food items are majorly deep fried and the oils that are used are mainly peanut oil, canola oil or sunflower oil which are high in trans-fat.

These are packed with omega-6 which may sound healthy but a large amount is bad for our skin. Omega-6, when taken in large amounts, is responsible for inflammation under our skin. This, in turn, results in redness of the skin, swelling, and pain. Also, these trans-fat rich oils when deep-fried form free radicals. The free radicals are enemies for good skin.

2. Gluten

We are all familiar with this protein that is found majorly in wheat, oats, etc. Although gluten in itself is not bad some people have an adverse effect when they eat it. People who suffer from celiac disease must avoid it all the times. Gluten is primarily considered bad for our intestines. It becomes a villain for us by overproducing Zonulin (which is a good protein for our gut).

This results in allowing undigested particles of our food to enter our bloodstream. This anomaly makes our immune system to take some countermeasures. The skin starts inflammation and slowly acne can appear. It is not a good food for our skin so we should avoid it as much as possible.

3. Dairy products

Some people are known to have breakout problems which are a result of dairy products consumption. They need special treatments for their skin. We can also take some precautions while consuming these products. The dairy products like milk and curd mostly are highly concentrated with pro-inflammatory substances.

These have adverse effects like acne, rashes and even lead to eczema. Also, they contain growth hormones. For females especially, they increase the hormone estrogen which is responsible for cystic breakouts. These are rather painful and can leave nasty scars. In addition to all these, there are the majority of people who are lactose intolerant. This condition weakens their digestive system and also creates allergies. These allergies appear as inflammation over the whole body and eczema.

4. Alcohol

There is a study that proves red wine to be a booster for good skin. It contains anti-oxidants which are helpful for our skin. But apart from that, alcohol is actually worse for our skin. It leads to premature aging of our skin cells and also causes acne. First and foremost, it is a dehydrating agent which makes our skin lose its moisture.

This affects our skin by making it less supple and also its elasticity is reduced. Our skin shows wrinkles and dullness. Alcohol depletes the collagen that is naturally present in our skin making it rough. These drinks spike our body’s sugar levels that can prevent our body to look healthy.

5. Caffeine

Who doesn’t like a steamy cup of good coffee in the morning? In fact, sometimes we cannot get through our day without regular doses of caffeine. But the thing that we don’t consider is- could it affect my health? A large amount of coffee or caffeine-induced drinks can definitely worsen our body’s health which will also show on our skin.

The everyday intake of caffeine increases our cortisol levels which are responsible for all those nasty zits and inflammation in our skin. It also creates an imbalance in our hormone level which may cause breakouts.

6. Refined food

Foods that are rich in refined carbohydrates are definitely a ‘no’ for our healthy skin. Food items like sodas, sweeteners, white rice, rice noodles, processed flour, etc are known to create adverse effects on our skin. They have a poor nutritional value as these items eventually break down into sugar which is bad for our gut. And an unhealthy gut means unhealthy skin. One of the major reasons for skin rashes and acne are refined carbohydrates.

They create an imbalance in our body by provoking the wrong kind of bacterias. These also produce an excess of oil in our body and clog the pores which is a major reason for whiteheads and blackheads on our skin. These processed sugar items contribute to the concern of premature aging by producing advanced glycation end products. So, we should avoid these items from our daily diet.

7. Corn

This juicy and golden grain may appear to be a health booster but it also has a dark side to it. This grain is proven to have a high glycemic index and this quality creates a sugar rush in our body. When we increase the sugar levels, the liver is unable to process all of it and then these sugary items get collected in the collagen. Since collagen is mainly responsible for good skin these items create a blockage and enhance breakouts and acne. We should be careful while choosing this in our diet.

These are some of the food items that can lead to depriving skin. It is also true that some of these items have good nutritional values but we should take them in proper proportions. As mentioned earlier, what we eat reflects on our skin. So we should choose healthy options for healthy skin.
