Top 5 Features & Applications of Stainless Steel Pipe

Stainless Steel Pipe

Selecting the piping materials that will be used in the construction or any activity requires you to consider a lot of factors. It is also important to identify and understand the differences among the different types of piping materials to make sure that you have made an appropriate decision on the materials that you are supposed to work on.

Since the properties of the different piping materials vary widely, the significance of these characteristics can also vary widely. The piping materials that you will choose depend on the application and the quality of fluids that you will run through them. Some common piping materials such as stainless steel pipe have the best features that make it appropriate for use in an extensive range of industries.

Basic Features of Steel

1. Strong and rigid

Steel is usually strong and rigid with a high toleration to thermal expansion. It is also subject to corrosion, but when it is mixed with the right type of alloys then it can resist corrosion. Remember, all types of steel usually contain carbon. So before you select the stainless steel pipe, you need to ask yourself whether it fits your purpose.

2. Controls Corrosion

Steel is usually used in the closed systems since it is inexpensive and one can control corrosion easily when it is used in these systems. It is also appropriate as compared to the other systems that are used under high pressure. It is also the best choice when you are constructing the steaming pipes. This is because it offers a perfect resistance to corrosion. One can work well under the high temperature and pressure conditions.

3. Last longer

If the amines are used in the appropriate way to neutralize the high pH that is found in the pipes, then it can last for a long period of time. Most industries do not want these chemicals in their environment due to health concerns. If you do not want to use these chemicals, you will need to make some changes to the stainless steel. You will have to add a clean system that will be utilized in the sterilization and humidification of the pipes.

4. Multiple tasks

Maintaining rigidity is very important since it plays a role in the determination of the distance among the hangers. The manufacturing of the steel is usually carried out in 20-ft length and the hangers can easily be spaced to increase the ability of the hangers to carry out different tasks.

5. Minimal need of Joints and Loops

When low co-efficient of the thermal expansion is utilized, it will minimize the need for the expansion joints and loops.  However, given that steel is highly rigid, it means that even if it has a lower expansion rate it has the ability of exerting high forces on the anchors.

Galvanized steel pipe is usually inserted into zinc and there are two main methods that are used to reduce the corrosion.

  • It coats the surface of steel in the same way that paint does and forms a layer such as Aluminum Oxide.
  • It produces an anode which is zinc that will receive the corrosion instead of the steel.

Applications of Steel Pipe

A pipe that is made using the galvanized steel offers a lot of benefits over the common type of steel pipe. It can work well in the corrosive environments even though there is a higher cost that you will have to incur when using it.

This works well in the applications where it is kept wet and dried on a regular basis. It can also fail to work appropriately in an environment where sodium is rampant, This is because sodium can make the oxide to detach itself from the metal. If it is being used in welding, it is very important for the welder to make sure that they have carried out the welding to reach the inner metal. It is also difficult and impossible to repair the galvanized steel on the side.

On the other side, copper pipe is utilized in a lot of applications as well. Copper is indeed an expensive metal but its core advantage is that it weighs less as compared to steel. There are also some contractors who might prefer the use of copper metal rather than the use of the galvanized steel.

Conclusion

But in the end, stainless steel is usually preferred since it is resistant to the different types of corrosion. There are also different steel alloys and it is important to make sure that you have made a decision on the best type of stainless steel that you want to utilize in your activities.

It is very important for you to consider the items that you need to use when constructing your piping system. Each of the materials that you find on the market have their own applications and some of them may not be suited to your line of industry. There are also the pros and cons that are associated with the extensive range of steel grades available in the market.
