According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Queen is the second-highest-selling rock band in history, behind The Eagles.

The Band Queen is also the most awarded band–they won a whopping 29 Grammy Awards and four Brit Awards. The band’s members were far from rock-and-roll legends when they first started.

1. How Queen Got Their Start Fun Facts

In 1968, Brian May and Roger Taylor met while studying at London’s Imperial College. They soon formed a band called Smile, along with bassist Tim Staffell.

Smile disbanded in 1970, and May, Taylor, and Staffell went their separate ways. In early 1971, Staffell quit the band, and May and Taylor placed an advert in Melody Maker seeking a new bassist.

John Deacon replied and joined the band. The following year, Freddie Mercury joined as lead vocalist and pianist, and the band became known as Queen. They released their self-titled debut album in 1973.

Did you know that the band Queen wrote a song for the 1984 Olympics? The song “One Vision” was written by Freddie Mercury and Brian May and is included on the album “A Kind of Magic.”

Also, the band’s song “We Will Rock You” was used as the film “Rocky III” theme song. And the song “Another One Bites the Dust” was actually written about cocaine!
