Have you offended a loved one by misgendering them?

I’m sure you did not mean to offend, but that does not resolve the situation. It is difficult to understand the gender spectrum, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

For a while, society did not acknowledge people’s preferred gender identity. Now, our society is bringing visibility to the different gender identities that exist.

There is a lot of new information on gender expression, and it’s constantly evolving. You can learn about gender identities by talking to peers and loved ones who are on the gender spectrum.

If you want to begin your research on your own, keep reading to learn the basics about gender identities.

Gender Expression

Gender expression may differ from your birth gender. It refers to how a person feels on the inside rather than how they look anatomically.

Nowadays, people will share their preferred gender pronouns to avoid being misgendered. So, if you do not know how to address someone, ask for their preferred pronouns.

Gender expression should not be confused with sexual preference. Your preferred gender does not determine who you fall in love with.

Non-Binary Gender

People who identify as non-binary don’t fit perfectly into either gender. They feel connected to both genders and are considered two-spirited in indigenous cultures.

Some people identify as non-binary later in life as they evolve and shift perspectives. It is not a fixed gender identity, so it is unique to the person expressing it.

Each non-binary person looks different, so do not assume their gender based on their looks. They prefer to use they/them pronouns to describe their gender identity.

Gender Nonconforming

Those who are gender nonconforming do not conform to gender roles. They are gender fluid, and their gender expression can shift frequently. If a person is masculine-presenting, do not assume that their pronouns are he/his.

In popular culture, gender nonconforming is viewed as androgyny. People who are gender nonconformists express what feels natural for them.

Transgender Person

Transgender people are assigned genders that don’t match their gender expression. They typically identify and express themselves as the opposite gender.

Transgender people typically change their name and appearance to fit preferred gender pronouns.

Some transgender people get cosmetic surgery to change their birth-assigned gender. This is the rare time when you can gender someone based on their appearance.

If you are unsure of their preferred pronouns, do not make any assumptions. Be respectful and ask them for their preferred gender pronouns.
