Truck Tyres

Difference Between High Performance, Sports And Light Truck Tyres

Light Truck Tyres

Tyres come in various sizes and types. Today, we are going to explore the most common types of tyres including sports tyres, high-performance tyres and light truck tyres:s

1. Sports tyres

Mounted on heavy vehicles such as full-size SUVs and pick trucks — sports tyres are engineered to deliver amazing handling and performance. There are big patch areas on sports tyres that enable them to grip dry surfaces like roads and highways. Mostly, sports tyres are used on large rims.

Here are some unique features of sports tyres:

  • Since these are meant to be used on highways and roads, the tread in these tyres has less depth which increases the fuel-efficiency
  • These tyres deliver better performance than other tyres because these are engineered to provide enhanced cornering, braking and handling. Due to stiffer sidewalls and big patch areas, cornering forces, these tyres can achieve high speed

However, you should consider the following things if you plan to buy sports tyres:

  • As discussed, sports tyres are crafted to be used on well-paved dry surfaces such as highways and roads. These can take serious damage if you take them to any rough terrain. For instance, if your tyre hits a pothole, the chance wheel damage is much higher in sports tyres.
  • These compound in these tyres is soft. This means that they can wear much faster. If you want a tyre with long life, then look for other options
  • You will have to compromise a little ride comfort when you are travelling on unsmooth or damaged roads as these have stiff and small sidewalls, which decreases the shock absorption capability

2. High Performance and Ultra-High-Performance Tires

High-performance tyres or HP tyres, which are quite popular today, were first brought to the market in the 1980s. These are similar to sports tyres. However, High-performance tyres have the ability to resist hydroplaning. This means you can expect great traction even when you are driving in wet conditions.

Just like sports tyres, these also give great handling and performance. HP tyres are ideal for the owners of high-performance cars.

Here are some unique features of High-performance tyres:

  • With stiff and slim sidewalls, HP tyres feature larger tread blocks which help them attain high speed
  • High-performance tyres are known for their exceptional handling. Tyre manufacturers keep the tread block large so the cornering is effective when the vehicle reaches high speed
  • These go well with light suspensions and steering

Things to consider when buying High-performance tyres

  • Although high-performance tyres can endure slight wet conditions, these are not designed to handle harsh weather conditions like snow or ice
  • While these are designed for higher speeds, there is a limit which driver should be aware of. If you try to exceed this limit, your tyres can lose traction

3. Light Truck or SUV tyres

You can find best light truck tyres in an array of sizes. These tyres are made for passenger trucks and large SUVs.  From pulling heavy loads to exploring rough terrains, these tyres can carry out a variety of tasks.

If you want a tyre for towing and carrying passenger while you mostly on highways and roads, then a standard light truck tyre is great for you. However, if you mostly drive on rugged surfaces such as gravel, mud or sand, then an SUV mud tyre is ideal for you. You can find other variations in light truck tyres such as all-terrain light truck tyres, summer light truck tyres or winter light truck tyres.

Since these come in various types, we will only discuss the features of popular SUV tyres. Here are some features:

  • Mud SUV tyres also are known as 4×4 SUV tyres are meant for off-road driving. These have aggressive tread pattern help maintain traction on rocks, gravel, etc.
  • The large size of SUV tyres gives them more ground clearance
  • Regardless of the kind of light truck tyre you have, these perform great in wet conditions

Things to consider when buying SUV tyres:

  • Brake pads wear down faster because of the heavyweight of vehicle
  • If you opt for SUV mud tyres or SUV all-terrain terrains, these will consume more fuel because these are upsized and the tread is deeper. As a result, the engine has to work hard and deliver more power.
