How To Sew Binding on a Quilt

Determine the Width of the Binding

To determine the width of the binding for your quilt, you will first need to measure the quilt top. To do this, measure from the top edge of the quilt, down one side, across the bottom, and back up the other side.
Make sure to measure in a straight line and do not curve the ruler around the edges of the quilt. Once you have the measurement of the quilt top, add 1/2 inch to that measurement. This is the width of the binding that you will need to cut.
Get the Raw Edges Aligned With the Raw Edge of the Quilt Top
To sew the binding on a quilt, get the raw edges of the strip aligned with the raw edge of the quilt top. Make sure the binding strip is at least 2 inches wide. If it is narrower, you will have to sew it on in multiple passes.
Start in the middle of one side of the quilt and sew to the corner. Stop with the needle down, lift the presser foot, and turn the quilt 90 degrees. Continue sewing down the next side. Repeat this process until you have sewn all four sides.
Attach the Binding to the Quilt
To attach the binding, first, measure the quilt top and cut the binding strips to the correct size. Next, position the binding strips on the quilt top, raw edges aligned with the quilt’s raw edges. Using a sewing machine, stitch the binding to the quilt top, using a ¼” seam allowance.
