All About Dentures

All About Dentures: Are They right for you?

Dentures, which are removable appliances, can be used to replace missing teeth and restore your smile. If you lose your teeth because of any dental disease or infection like gum disease, tooth decay, replacing missing teeth can improve your appearance and health. In such scenario Dentures makes it easier than ever to eat and speak better, something that many people take as a given.

If you lose all your teeth, your facial muscles can become sagging, which can make you appear older. Dentures can improve the shape and appearance of your profile and face. You can have them made to look very similar to your natural teeth, so your appearance doesn’t change. Your smile may look even better with dentures.

Different types of dentures

Conventional. After the tissues heal and all remaining teeth have been removed, a full-removable denture can be made.

Immediate

The removable denture can be inserted the same day as the rest of your teeth are removed. During a first visit, your dentist will measure and create models of your jaw. While you don’t need to lose your teeth for the healing period, it is possible to have the denture relined after the jaw has healed.

Overdenture

Some teeth can be saved in order to preserve your jawbone, and to provide stability and support for your denture. After your dentist has prepared the teeth, an overdenture can be fitted over them. The same function can be performed by implants.

For a few weeks, dentures can feel strange until you get used to them. While dentures might feel loose, your cheek muscles and tongue will learn to hold them in place. Minor irritation and soreness are not uncommon. Temporarily, saliva flow may increase. These problems will disappear as your mouth gets used to dentures. After a denture has been inserted, it is common to need follow-up visits with your dentist. This allows the fit to be checked and adjusted. Consult your dentist if you have any problems, especially if it is irritation or soreness.

Why do we need to get Dentures?

While dentures did a lot of good things – like helping people look better, speak more clearly and enjoy eating a variety of foods – those benefits don’t always last forever.

As we age our mouths change just like the rest of us. Our gums and the bones below them can start to recede or shrink. It happens to everyone, but it’s especially true for folks who’ve lost their natural teeth. What’s more, when that happens our jaws can even begin to line up differently, with the result that dentures don’t fit as securely.

That can be a serious problem because dentures that don’t fit right can cause irritation, embarrassment and pain when the person eats.I always act like I don’t notice when Mom’s dentures slip,” my patient said ” but I can tell she’s embarrassed. And it certainly wouldexplain why she’s stopped eating all the healthy things she’s always loved.

A Simple Answer

“I certainly think it’s a good possibility,” I said, “but fortunately there’s a way to help her feel confident again and get back to eating well.”

How do Dentures work?

I explained that the same technology that made it possible for dentists to replace lost teeth with implants that looked, and acted like natural teeth could also be used to keep dentures in place.

The way it works is remarkably simple. Instead of ending in a tooth, each denture implant ends in a small, sturdy male coupling – often a little metal ball. A female coupling attached to the underside of the denture clips over the ball locking the denture firmly in place – so the denture is secure but it can be removed easily for cleaning

In many cases as few as two of these implants can stabilize a lower denture and keep it from slipping when someone talks or eats.

For patients who have lost all their teeth, the process of denture stabilization using implants can be far less expensive than replacing lost teeth with multiple implants and bridges.

What’s more, if a person’s dentures are in excellent condition, we can often adapt them to work with the implants. There’s simply no reason why anyone should have to put up with dentures that cause embarrassment or keep them from eating well.

If you or someone you know would like to arrange an appointment to learn about how these implants can make eating – and life – a lot
