Lost Mail? Tips for Tracking Down Your Missing Mail

The U.S. Postal Service processes more than 425 million pieces of mail each day—that’s over 290,000 per hour!

While most mailpieces will end up at their destination, some will inevitably get lost. For example, this can happen if the shipping label falls off or if the address is incorrect.

Not only that, but errors can also happen during the sorting process.

Do you have a missing package? Not sure how to track down your lost mail? If so, you’re at the right place.

We’ll be going over some tips on how to find missing mail below. Keep reading to learn more!

1. Check Your Mail Status

If your mail has a tracking number, you can enter it on the carrier’s website to check on the current status; that’ll let you know where it is and the estimated delivery date.

For example, it may only be delayed (eg. stuck in transit) and not necessarily lost.

Depending on the carrier, you may also be able to get e-mail or text updates on its current status. Simply enter your information on their website and they’ll notify you when it’s on the way or if there are any delays.

And if you’re the sender, you can always check the green card certified mail receipt for proof of delivery.

2. Submit a Mail Search Request

If your mail is coming through USPS and you think it’s lost, you can complete their online help request form. They’ll forward it to your local post office, which will help locate the item.

If your mail or package still hasn’t arrived after 7 business days, you can submit a Missing Mail Search Request. To do this, you’ll need the following information:

  • Recipient mailing address
  • Sender mailing address
  • Identifying information such as the tracking number or mailing receipt
  • Size of envelope or container used
  • Pictures that could help identify the item

Once you’ve submitted the Missing Mail Search Request, they’ll send you a confirmation email. And if they find it, they’ll send it to the provided address.

3. Ask Your Neighbors

Sometimes, the status will say “delivered” even if you didn’t receive anything. In cases like this, you’ll want to ask your neighbors if they’ve received any mail that’s for you.

It’s possible that there was a mix-up with the apartment or building number.

Mail theft is another possibility. If anything, it’s a common problem that only gets worse during the holidays. If you think that may be the case, it’s best to report it to the police and your local post office.

Knowing How to Find Lost Mail

As you can see, there are several things that you can do to track down your lost mail. Keep in mind, however, that not all missing mail will be found. With that said, it’s always worth trying.
