Should You Get an RV or Camper Van?

Did you know that 48 million households camped at least once in 2020?

If you’re thinking about camping regularly, then you may be on the lookout for the right camping vehicle.

You have many choices, but RVs and camper vans are two of the most popular.

If you’re struggling to choose between an RV or camper, then read on as we take a closer look at both options.

RV or Camper: What’s the Difference?

The term RV is often used to cover a variety of different vehicles, but the term is most commonly used to refer to motor homes.

A motor home is a vehicle that is usually built on a truck or bus chassis and is designed to serve as a self-contained living environment for recreational travel. Motor homes are designed for their specific purpose and are not intended to be used a general purpose vehicle. Combined with a source of power, such as a Yeti 6000x, a motor home has everything you could need to live comfortably, including a bathroom and a shower.

A camper van is a converted van that can be used as a general purpose vehicle as well as for camping. It is usually smaller in size than an RV and has basic sleeping and eating facilities, but no bathroom or shower. There is no divide between the driving and sleeping sections of a camper van.

Benefits of an RV

RVs offer a number of obvious benefits.

For a start, you don’t need to worry about finding somewhere to stop when you need to use the bathroom. You also don’t need to find somewhere with a shower when you want to get clean. You can camp truly off-grid, which gives you a much wider choice of places to visit.

Since motor homes are built on a larger chassis, the vehicles themselves can be much larger. That means you have more room inside, making the space more comfortable, and offering the option to include more people on the trip. It also allows for more storage, so you can bring more with you on your road trips.

Benefits of a Camper Van

A camper van may be smaller, but this offers some benefits of its own.

For a start, you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space. A camper van will fit in most regular parking spots, which definitely isn’t the case for an RV. They’re also much easier to use if you want to take a trip into a local town, for example.

With a camper van, you also have fewer concerns about any height restrictions. A camper van will usually fit through any gaps that a standard car or truck can fit through. With an RV, certain routes may be off limits to you.

Camper vans are also cheaper to buy and have lower running costs too.

RV or Camper: The Choice is Yours

As you can see, both RVs and camper vans have their merits. Whether you decide on an RV or camper will really come down to your personal circumstances. Your budget, the size of your family, and the types of trips you want to make will all impact your choice.

Whichever decision you make, we hope you have many years of great camping trips.
