Types of Coffee Roasts

Most Americans start their day with coffee. They prefer it black and drink it fast, so they can get to work or school. However, not many of them know much about the different types of coffee roasts.

There are several different types of coffee to choose from. It all depends on when the roasted beans are prepared and how long they’re roasted.

Not sure what we mean? Not sure which type of roast to buy or how to brew it? Don’t worry. Here’s everything you need to know about the types of coffee.

Light Roasts

Light roasts have a light brown color and a slightly oily surface. They’re not roasted for as long as dark roasts, so they maintain more of their original flavor. The downside to this is that some of the natural bitterness is also retained.

The acidity is also more pronounced in light roasts. This coffee has a more delicate flavor with nuances of floral and fruity notes. They are sometimes referred to as New England or blond roasts.

Medium Roasts

Medium roasts are typically well-balanced, with neither too much acidity nor too much bitterness. They tend to have richer, robust flavors.

They are often used for coffee blends, as they provide a good balance of flavor and body. Also, it is versatile in any type of coffee drink. Some people buy the best coffee blend made of medium roasts including hazelnut, city, and full city.

Dark Roasts

Dark roasts of coffee beans are very popular among coffee drinkers. This type of coffee has been roasted for a longer period of time, resulting in a darker color and a more intense flavor.

These coffees often have a more robust, smoky flavor and can be less acidic than light or medium roasts. They are typically roasted at higher temperatures, and as a result, they can sometimes have a slightly burnt flavor.

Flavored Roasts

Flavored coffee beans are roasted beans that have been infused with natural or artificial coffee flavors. The flavors can be added before, during, or after the roasting process.

The most common flavorings are vanilla, chocolate, and caramel. Many coffee shops offer a variety of flavored coffees, such as hazelnut, mocha, and pumpkin spice.

Decaffeinated Roasts

They’re made up of a chemical process. This process can remove the caffeine from the beans before they’re roasted. This process can result in a coffee that is less flavorful than its caffeinated counterpart.

The Different Flavors of Coffee Roasts

Coffee roasting is an art and a science. There are many different ways to roast coffee beans, and each results in a unique flavor profile. The type of roast you choose will depend on your personal preferences.

If you like a bold, rich flavor, you may want to try a dark roast. If you prefer a milder taste, a light roast may be a better choice. Ultimately, it’s up to you to experiment with different coffee roasts to find the one that’s right for you.
