Believe it or not, it’s possible to wash it and we’ll show you how to wash a jersey. We’ll also explain when it’s an acceptable time to do so.

Keep reading to know more about the jersey washing guide.

Gather the Materials You Need

The most important items you need include a mesh laundry bag, a gentle detergent, a fabric softener, and a washing machine. Additionally, a temperature-specific label will help ensure your Mets jersey is washed correctly.

All of these materials will help protect the jersey while it is in the wash and avoid any shrinkage or damage. Once you have the correct materials, be sure to inspect the jersey for any stains which require pre-treatment or specialized care.

Pre-Soak Jersey

To start, you should always pre-soak jerseys before washing them. This avoids damage from colored stains that may occur when washing with other items.

Pre-soaking is simply submerging the jersey in cold water and allowing it to soak for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if stains are particularly stubborn.

After pre-soaking, it should be transferred to a cold water cycle with a mild detergent.

Wash Jersey in the Machine

The first step to washing a jersey in the machine is to turn the jersey inside out prior to washing. This will help prevent fading and damage.

Then, pour a capful of laundry detergent into the machine, and select a cold water wash cycle. Be sure to close all buttons and zippers on the jersey before washing.

Also, select a gentle cycle setting or permanent press setting on the machine, to ensure that the jersey gets a thorough cleaning but also extra protection. When the washing cycle is complete, hang the jersey to air dry.

Air Dry Jersey

When it comes time to air dry, pull the jersey out of the water and gently wring it. Place it flat on a drying rack or a clean towel, and reshape it as its air dries. Do not put the jersey in a dryer, as the heat can damage the material.

Avoid direct sunlight when air drying a jersey, as too much light can cause the colors to fade. Hang the jersey up when it is only partially damp and let it finish drying on a hanger.

De-Lint and Store Jersey

Once washed and dried, delint the jersey using a roller dedicated to that purpose. After carefully delinting, it is important to store the jersey properly in a cool, dark, and dry space away from direct sunlight.

This will help ensure that the jersey retains its shape and condition.
