5 Helpful Tips for Beginner Runners

People get into running for a variety of reasons. We all have different goals when it comes to hitting the trails, and they can vary from wanting to lose weight to improving our cardio to just wanting that coveted endorphin rush.

Whatever your reason, one thing that remains the same for everyone is that we want to make sure we’re prepared when we start to learn to run. Here are five great tips for beginner runners to help you get started on your journey.

1. Get Your Stretch On

Depending on age and fitness level, some of us are going to be more limber than others. But regardless of how far along you are in your fitness journey, you should still be sure to take the time to stretch out your body before you hit the pavement or trail.

You risk injury without a proper warmup, and you want to get those muscles loose before putting them under too much stress. There are plenty of stretching exercises you can do for your hamstrings, quads, calves, back and more.

2. Invest in Proper Equipment

Injury prevention starts with the right equipment. It’s always a great idea to get fitted for the right pair of sneakers. Talk to a local running shop like St Pete Running Company and get advice from professionals that have been in the game for a long time.

While there might be a bit of an upfront cost with acquiring the proper gear, it’s going to be well worth it in the long run when you avoid unnecessary pain and injury.

3. Practice Good Form

Believe it or not, there is a right and a wrong way to run. If possible, head to your nearest running establishment and have a professional watch you on a treadmill.

Getting started on the right foot, so to speak, will not only make running more enjoyable, but it’s going to keep you healthy and make sure you’re not overcompensating the wrong muscles and joints.

4. Look Into Runner Groups

Sometimes finding the motivation to go it alone can be difficult. Joining a running group solves that problem by supplying you with a host of accountability partners that will keep you in check and motivate you along the way.

It can also be a great way to meet new people and form friendships. Even if you aren’t the most social person, it’s a great way to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.

5. Have Fun

Running doesn’t have to be a chore! If you approach it with the right attitude, it can end up being a lot of fun. As mentioned above, finding a running partner or a group can be a great way to add some enjoyment to your exercise. Invest in some good earbuds, make some upbeat running playlists, and you’ll be well on your way.

Beginner Runners Can Turn Into Advanced Runners

We all have to start somewhere. But when we put in the work, beginner runners can quickly turn into veterans, and before you know it, you’ll be craving those runs the way you used to crave unhealthy snacks.

There’s no better time to start than right now. For more great content, check out all of our great lifestyle articles.
