The Most Popular Types of Beers Around the World

Did you know that most beers in the world can be separated into the ale and lager categories? It is the yeast that defines them, collecting at the bottom in lagers and the top in ales. But do you know how many different types of beer there are under these genres?

If not then we have the guide for you. Read on as we discuss the types of beers most popular around the world.

Pilsner

Pilsner is one of the most popular beers across the world. It was originally developed as a way to brew in colder climates. However, the ability to create it in most conditions has given it a global appeal.

Each country and region have variations on this classic. It always tends to have a light, golden color, with only a mild bitterness.

There are numerous commercially produced brand names available. You can also opt for craft-brewed, traditional recipes. Read more about the excellent East Brother Bohemian Beer here.

IPA

Indian Pale Ale (IPA)is one of the most popular beers on the craft scene. It is made using hops, which provide it with a fruity and zesty body. Unlike lagers, you get the taste of fruit and forest aromas.

The hops used in the brewing process dictate the type and flavor. American and West Coast IPA varieties are two widely brewed ones, each with distinctive tastes.

Stout

Stout is a dark, heavy beer with a lot of body. It is top-fermented and has many historical connotations, as it took much longer to spoil in the days before refrigeration. The oldest recipe can be dated back to 1677 in the Egerton Manuscripts.

Originally a dark English beer, it was great for export. This means it has many geographical varieties. It traveled along the Black Sea and Baltic Coasts, giving rise to the strong Russian variations.

The most famous stout has to be Guinness. It is estimated that 30% of the beer consumed in Ireland is stout, the home of the brand.

Wheat Beer

Wheat beer is a brew in which most of the grain used is wheat as opposed to malted barley. It has a cloudy appearance, citrus taste, and is full of body.  Often known as Witbiers or Hefeweizens, they are one of the trickier beers to brew correctly.

Fruit Beers

Fruit beer is a brew that uses fermented fruit as a flavoring. This practice originates from Belgium where raspberries would make Framboise and cherries would make Kriek. These are part of the Lambic beer tradition.

Almost anything can make a fruit beer. Flavors from tropical mango to soothing lemon are possible. It can be added to the beer as concentrated fruit, puree, or whole fruits that can replace the sugars.
