What Are the Different Types of Servers That Exist Today?

Did you know that the global server market is worth more than $80 billion? And thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, that value is expected to climb significantly over the next several years.

Servers allow us to process data for private and commercial use. By knowing about the different types of servers and how they work, you’ll be better suited to take advantage of your data storage and processing.

So if you’d like to learn more then keep on reading and we’ll take you through everything that you’re going to want to know!

1. Web Server

A web server is used to access the internet through public domain software. These are some of the best servers because they connected stored information that’s online to your device.

These servers store information for the internet that’s retrieved via “HTTP” code and then sent to your computer.

2. Virtual Machine (VM)

If you work in the IT industry then you’re probably already familiar with virtual machines. These servers store and connect information through virtual space.

In order to make a virtual machine, an IT department will use software to have one piece of physical hardware run thousands of virtual machines. This is used for data storage and transfer.

It’s one of the more affordable servers because you’re using minimal hardware.

3. Proxy Server

A proxy server is like a cross between a client server and a host server. A proxy sends information from the internet to your device’s IP address. But that information just needs to go through a proxy server.

This adds extra security because the data never directly move from one user to another. By using a proxy server, you can filter out malware and other dangerous entities from the internet.

4. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Server

A file transfer protocol server is used to move files from one device to another. Your uploaded data moves from your device to the server while downloaded files are taken from the server and moved to your device. FTP also refers to a method of using a server to connect one device to another in order to safely share files.

5. File Server

You can use a file server to store information for multiple users. These servers allow you to quickly retrieve data and quickly write or save files.

This is a basic server that’s used by companies where a lot of people need to conveniently access files.
